Electives

This course introduces concepts relevant to race and ethnicity, and provides knowledge of their relationship to life in the United States of America. Topics studied will include prejudice, discrimination, immigration, religion, diversity, and social construction. The course will also present contemporary examples and statistical data to assist students in understanding race and ethnicity. The course demands in-depth reading of the textbook, and will require students to become familiar with basic definitions, historical and present-day analysis, and sociological concepts that surround race and ethnicity. Due to the reading level of this course and the mature lesson topics, it is recommended for 11^th and 12^th graders only.

Students will explore the visual world through an understanding of the fundamentals of art and design. Students will solve basic art and design problems in the medias of drawing, painting, and printing. Visual discrimination and judgment of the various art processes will be taught along with the problem solving aspects of art and design. This course requires students to purchase their own basic art supplies (all of which are available at common general retail sores); a list can be provided before enrollment. Students are also required to have access to a camera to photograph his/her artwork.

Today’s Teen is a very dynamic course for high school students. This course could make a significant difference for the student’s teen years to young adulthood. The course is packed with “How To’s”; “Making a Difference”; “Trying Things Out”; “Taking Notes”; “Career Network”; and most important “Who Am I?” The course focuses on a teen in his/her world; building relationships; having effective friends; honoring family members; managing life, maintaining good health and wellness through exercise, food, and nutrition, and dressing for success with clothing that suits the individual.

Spanish 3 is continuation of a beginning level course that will introduce the student to a variety of areas of language learning. In this course, the student will learn listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through activities that are based on pedagogically proven methods of foreign language instruction. Throughout the five units of material (Daily Routine, Animals, Hobbies, The Body and Descriptions), students learn to express themselves using an ever increasing vocabulary, present-tense verbs, articles, and adjectives. Grammar is introduced and practiced in innovative and interesting ways with a variety of learning styles in mind. Culture is sprinkled throughout the course in an attempt to help the learner focus on the Spanish speaking world and their culture, people, geographical locations and histories.

Spanish 1 is a beginning level course that will introduce the student to a variety of areas of language learning. Throughout the five units of material (Greetings, The date, Weather, Time and Colors), students learn to express themselves using an ever increasing vocabulary, present-tense verbs, articles, and adjectives. Culture is sprinkled throughout the course in an attempt to help the learner focus on the Spanish speaking world and their culture, people, geographical locations and histories.
