Electives

This course is an independent study course with a focus on service learning. Each student will submit a project plan for community service that will be approved by the teacher. The plan will include a minimum of forty-five (45) documented service learning activity hours as well as research and budget assignments. The course is complete with the student writing a press release about their project and the completion of a partner survey. If you took Service Learning 1, you must choose a different community project and partner.

This course serves as an introduction to computer terminology and computer equipment and provides fundamental concepts for using PC-based software. Topics covered include ethics, the Internet and world wide web, e-commerce, home networks, file management and system software. Emphasis is placed on the use of computers to assist with business issues. The impact of computers on our lives is also explored. Students will need regular access to a computer and the Internet to complete this course.

This course introduces concepts relevant to race and ethnicity, and provides knowledge of their relationship to life in the United States of America. Topics studied will include prejudice, discrimination, immigration, religion, diversity, and social construction. The course will also present contemporary examples and statistical data to assist students in understanding race and ethnicity. The course demands in-depth reading of the textbook, and will require students to become familiar with basic definitions, historical and present-day analysis, and sociological concepts that surround race and ethnicity. Due to the reading level of this course and the mature lesson topics, it is recommended for 11^th and 12^th graders only.

Students will explore the visual world through an understanding of the fundamentals of art and design. Students will solve basic art and design problems in the medias of drawing, painting, and printing. Visual discrimination and judgment of the various art processes will be taught along with the problem solving aspects of art and design. This course requires students to purchase their own basic art supplies (all of which are available at common general retail sores); a list can be provided before enrollment. Students are also required to have access to a camera to photograph his/her artwork.
