Social Studies

In this course students will understand the cultural and political characteristics of major countries of the world, and similarities and differences between peoples throughout our world; location and basic geographic features of all continents; and major countries within each continent. Historically, the study includes the birth of democracy; the age of imperialism; nationalism and the spread of war and revolution; and the postwar world. Students will develop an ability to read and understand maps, tables, and globes. It is designed for the student who has skills below grade level in reading, writing, and/or vocabulary, with emphasis on vocabulary terms.

This second semester of World History/Geography begins with identify, defining, and analyzing the eight World History Themes. The student will then thoroughly explore the five Geography Themes. Each chapter will preview the themes and bring a better understanding of World History. World History and Geography on all seven continents from 1500 AD to the present will be studied.

This course is a study of our world and its history, its people, and the land. The student will be exposed to the relationships between different countries, continents, and the people within each. Included in the study will be a comparison of the people, customs, and politics of each area of the globe. Understanding maps, directions, grids, and graphs will also be included. In relationship to our physical world, the history of man from ancient times to the twentieth century is examined. It is designed for the student who has skills below grade level in reading, writing, and/or vocabulary, with emphasis on vocabulary terms.

This second semester course provides a 0.5 credit study of the major historical issues in the world and the individual’s responsibilities and opportunities in the dynamic world through world history. It covers cultural and political characteristics of major countries of the world and relationships between people throughout our world. Content covers the birth of democracy; the age of imperialism; nationalism and the spread of war and revolution; and the postwar world. The footsteps of history point to the future.
