Community Service Experience- “Creating The Habit of Giving Back”
Students had high hopes of getting all the feel good butterflies from helping the homeless population. However when we arrived and they were told that they would be sorting through used clothes and taking inventory on hundreds of pack of underwear, their tunes seemed to change.
Great conversations about what “giving back” truly means filled the bus on the way back to the school.
Many students had to check themselves about the real reasons they felt so unsatisfied with the work they did while volunteering.
Biggest lessons learned: Helping in the background without being acknowledged is just as important as being recognized. The spirit of giving back is “heart work” not easy work.
